Big Ben Roethlisberger has hung up his size 13 cleats and left the Pittsburgh Steelers with the most compelling battle for the starting QB job in the NFL this year. The Steelers brought in the 2017 2nd overall pick in the draft Mitch Trubisky to compete with incumbent backup Mason Rudolph and 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett.
Position battles like this, particularly at quarterback, offer us betting opportunities in the preseason. The Steelers, unlike most NFL teams, will really need these preseason games to determine their starting signal caller for Week 1. For us bettors, this means more playing time than usual for guys who normally might only go a series or two before grabbing a ballcap and a clipboard.
The Seahawks, too, have a QB competition on their hands. Geno Smith and former Bronco Drew Luck find themselves in a battle to replace Russell Wilson. The drop-off from Wilson to Luck and Smith is immense and we think we’ll see evidence of such in the first preseason game. We’ll be betting against Geno Smith in the regular season and we might as well get started now. He’ll struggle against a formidable first-team Steeler D and we’ll happily take the trio of Steeler QB’s and lay the 3 points against the Seahawks.
